June 2010 Kandhamal, Orissa Update

By Timothy Sathuluri | Thu, 17 Jun 2010

God graciously given us an opportunity to serve Him through bible school in Kandhamal a state in Orissa, most dangerous and notorious place for Christians. They tortured and killed many for their faith.

They requested us "to come and strengthen us physically and spiritually" as you know God is helping me to strengthen spiritually through you. If God helps me through you to strengthen the pastors with essentials like bed sheets, towels shirts and pants and for the wives saris, petticoats and blouses it will be glory to Him.

We have organized the dates to leave Hyderabad early morning of Saturday, July 4th, 2010 and reach Berhampur by the evening, spend the night, have the next day for Sunday worship and leave in the afternoon to Gondu Udaygiri (Gondus is a tribe).

I would like to refresh your mind with the memory of Christian martyrs in Kandhamal, Orissa. Bro John Barwa, bishop of Rourkela, is among the delegates. His niece, Sister Meeva, was raped during the anti-Christian pogroms in Kandhamal. "I am a Tribal," the bishop said, and "I am grateful to the missionaries who freed my life."

Hindu fundamentalists have attacked Christians in recent time in two different areas of the Orissa. The believers there cannot even have prayers, gatherings and meals together. The attackers are terrorizing Christians even now. The Hindu radicals beat three visiting Christian pastors following a ceremony in Deogarh district. Biranchi Kispata and his wife, a recently converted tribal Christian couple, had organized the thanksgiving event to celebrate the recovery of their sick child. But when police arrived on the scene, they detained the pastors. They were released after explaining the purpose of their visit.

The pastors were not keen to file a report against the attackers Biranchi. His wife also said that they would remain Christians and not file a case against the offenders as they have forgiven them. In a second incident, Hindu fundamentalists attacked dalit Christian Bhagat Bivar, who embraced Christianity four years ago, and burned his house.
